the Trader with spy mindset

It is sad that people look down upon technicals. Technicals are the footprints of the operators and masses. it is like a Morse code of secret communication. Technical traders have to have the mindset of a spy.

The best way to master any indicator is to learn in reverse. Mark 100 high and low points of any chart and see what that indicator did at ALL  of those points. the secret will be revealed to you. like Bruce Lee advised, practice one (or select) technical(s) a thousand times....self talk

trading blind

can you fly a plane in zero visibility?

yes, if you have instruments with the technology.

can u trade without seeing price?

yes, if you have "technicals" technology.

i know some traders who keep price view "off" and trade only by seeing technicals. what they check for is of another level.

emotionless trading based on instruments.

(sweet) poisoned by fundamentals

as a technical trader, i am not bothered by the why's and how's. though i am amused and intrigued, frankly.

finding the why's and how's actually is none of my business as a technical trader. i make sure that my analysis or thoughts or systems are not polluted or adulterated or (sweet) poisoned by fundamentals. i love to trade with ears and mind shut tight.

everything is built in the chart (not in the price : which is a different and mere instantaneous thing) with shadows in the technicals.....as they say, technicals know that the news is coming (or not coming).

I can't be an expert in difficult anti trend cheeky guerilla snatch trades if I'm not v good first at pro trend no brainer one.

driving in low visibility and shooting with a rocket

in trading, price prediction is like driving a car at night or in low visibility.

while it is very much possible to foresee which way the road is bending ahead but it is only as much clear as is the distance till which the light is thrown by the headlight.

charts and indicators of a particular timeline throw light only till a particular distance ahead.

we can see reasonably clearly till a distance (for that timeline chart). when we get there or as we get closer, we see beyond that point more clearly). the road becomes visible as we travel further.

it is not possible to look beyond a distance with a particular timeline chart.

to look further, we have to switch to higher timeline chart.

but as we do that, accuracy and least count decreases.

a trader, therefore, shouldn't whip himself to know all the answers with same clarity at once.

and believe me, situations change as we get closer. not only because we couldn't see what was there already at a distance, but also because things change before we reach there. markets are dynamic situations. operators act as shock absorbers.

that is why, if you ask me about closer to the present, i can attempt shooting an ant, but if you ask me far or wide, i would need a planet to shoot with a rocket.

trend is like a hand pump (& other musings)

A trend is like a hand pump. It gives you opportunities again and again for profit to keep coming out from the other side.

-

if we enter on price logic, we should exit on price, if we enter on rsi bullish divergence we should quit if that BD structure is destroyed.

-

In bull runs, pullbacks are like stretched pressed springs.

-

Technicals are not dumb. We are hard of hearing. Markets and operators tease us by speaking out the secrets in technicals...we refuse to learn the new language beyond the slangs.

-

Corrections are pillars for higher stories of the bull buildings.

-

2 to 3 technical indicators are enough IMHO. But don't do friendship with them. Marry them. Surrender your life....(Whatever indicates is an indicator... dance in sync and you know what it is saying)

don't bother about the news

imo, technical traders should be purists.

they shouldn't bother about fundamentals or news.

any news or development that doesn't go with the trend/contour predicted by advance technical analyses is likely to be dampened and nullified thus giving chance to the technical and tactical trader another (artificial) opportunity to trade to profit.

an eye on a forthcoming news is the max a purist trechnical trader should keep. that's all.

predicting which way the event unfurls is not that important (it is anyway impossible to predict the outcome except with insider's information). what's actually important is having a tactical trade setup (with a plan to profit from whichever way the market moves after or during the event).

how many times have we seen market go big up and then big down after the completion of the event such as end of budget speech or fed/rbi rate cut or increase?

prices are sniffer dogs of fundamental masters.....they have the insider information of the approaching fundamentals.

any "disturbing" news or fundamental doesn't survive for long. operators can't stop news, but they can more than absorb them.....worse, they use them

events are known beforehand to the powers which are.

and the shadow of their intentions are clear on the charts/indicators/signs. any drama courtesy event/news (foreseen/unforeseen) is not much different from crocodile tears.

gulp it all with a pinch of salt.

and don't forget to say "thank you". good traders should be masters of mannerisms and etiquette, especially when in profit.

unusable wisdom

"Significance of Trend-line is function of its length, number of times it has been tested (touched) and the angle of ascent of descent."

my view =

but nobody tells you that you won't come to know how much is too much and after how many bluffs the so called range or trend line will break.

so this "wisdom" is un usable and is a mere witchcraft for witch hunting.

I've seen innumerable sheeps getting slaughtered in this maze.

Levels and trendlines are highly subjective.

Everyone has one unique. All those add to the uncertainty nervousness of an already shaky trader.

Stop loss concept has its roots in levels and trend lines, and hence form favourite baits of operators.

Stone paper scissor

[7:22AM, 05/06/2015] jagmohan: I have a dozen shortlisted filtered special Trading tricks..... The good thing is that atleast one of them works brilliantly at any given time but the not so good thing is finding which one....... That is left to me to decide and therein lies the mind boggling challenge...... Self talk
[7:24AM, 05/06/2015] jagmohan: There is so much random mischievous yet conscious move of market by operators that no one way works all the time.....though some thing always does
[7:26AM, 05/06/2015] jagmohan: Market is not one but a clever dynamic random mixture of 10 phases, moods, setups..... self talk
[7:27AM, 05/06/2015] jagmohan: Sort of stone paper scissor with much more options

How to start learning trading

[4:23PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: What are the basic necessary parameters required from your point of view ?
[4:23PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: money doesn't marry those who will not be willing to do anything for her!!!
[4:23PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: parameters bole to.....technical indicators
[4:23PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: lemme outline a few good candidates....
[4:24PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 1. sma
[4:24PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: Please
[4:24PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: best one
[4:24PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 2. rsi
[4:24PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 3. options data
[4:24PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 4. volumes (for stocks), fii/dii data (for indices)
[4:25PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 5. patterns (like rising triangle, wedges, continuation triangles
[4:25PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 6. supports and resistances
[4:25PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: What time period of sma is required? 5 or 14 day
[4:25PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 7. trendlines
[4:26PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: all period combinations are good....methods are woven reverse....based on specific period....
[4:26PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: however, it is the tick size (the least count) of the chart which is crucial
[4:26PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: smaller ticksize for shorter period trading....
[4:27PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: eg, i take 30 minnute ticksize chart fr positional and 5 min tick chart for short term
[4:28PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: and ofcourse.....when u r out there sweating the practice, u will come across bonus diamonds which no book or software can or will tell u and those will be ur copyright / trademark gems!!!
[4:29PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: u have to work hard to deserve those "lucky" finds....."the harder i work, the luckier i get" (quote)
[4:30PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 90%, if not 99%, of the traders are trading casually......and have no future!!!
[4:30PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: 👍📝RSI below 30 and above 80?
[4:31PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: What's the range?
[4:33PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: what a pity that those 90% think that learning trading the above way is "difficult"
[4:33PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: if u love something, it is no more difficult
[4:33PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: never just see rsi value.....
[4:34PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i have said this in dozens of rsi articles iu have written in all these years....all are archived in my blog or mudraa.....
[4:34PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: everyone looks at the rsi value and tries to trade according to those only....and gets trapped....
[4:36PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i have jotted down rsi protocols and rules in my articles (not possible to reproduce here all of them) which should be used instead of plain rsi values
[4:37PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: In bestbusinessintheworld.blogspot. com
[4:37PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa jeneel shah surendranagar gujarat: And as per ur views js sir all indicates bullish.  Right??    What if sudden gap down ??   Like if today usa falls down heavily and tomorrow if we get gap down 100points. Than all parameters changes in few minutes??
[4:38PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i have done some original work on rsi and william which i bet are not available anywhere in the world....print or web.....to the extent that even the inventor welles wilder doesn;t know them either....i have read him extensively.....he did the all important basic work but somehow didn't go beyond a level.....i gues he is still alive
[4:38PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: yes, that;s the blog
[4:38PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: thebestbusinessintheworld.blogspot.in
[4:39PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: 👍will search there
[4:39PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: @jeneel superb question....
[4:40PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: 8/8 bullish signals doesn't mean there will and can't be volatility or fluctuations.........just because obama decided to kill osama doesn't mean that it will be as simple as taking appointment and visiting him to shoot
[4:40PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa jeneel shah surendranagar gujarat: I asked because you experienced twice last month.  I think. ...but you recoverd double
[4:41PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: after the parameters have revealed that storng bullish winds are there, now, operators will try and create trading situations where very fwew will be able to actually get or remain onboard
[4:42PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: see jeneel, i got off because there were some holes in my method for such a situation....which i have since plugged......
[4:42PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i don't rule out more holes, but the detected ones stand plugged
[4:43PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: and
[4:44PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: if there is an unforeseen (for operators) development in the world overnight, operators may change their plan and that will show up in changing parameters......
[4:44PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: but we will get time
[4:44PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: if we lose 100 points till we get signal, it will mean that the subsequesnt rally will atleast be 500 points....
[4:44PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa jeneel shah surendranagar gujarat: No words for u😷😷😷
[4:45PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: later the signal, longer the rally....and vice versa
[4:45PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa jeneel shah surendranagar gujarat: Exactly😄👍👍👍
[4:45PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: but
[4:45PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: as of now.....8/8
[4:45PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: how can i say something else when this is what i see
[4:45PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i can't be apologetic for the mischiefs operators play......
[4:46PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa jeneel shah surendranagar gujarat: Yes correct I agree sirji
[4:48PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: 👍 good lesson learnt for me Js ji.  Let This learning will be a continuous process for me.
[4:49PM, 27/01/2015] mudraa gowtham kumar: Will read your blogs on RSI and will come back with more questions.
[4:50PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i don't have any "vibhuuti" for turning into super traders......only heat, dust sweats, tears, blood....my dear friends....
[4:50PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: but one thing i can assure...all this turns into the gold dust....
[4:52PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa jeneel shah surendranagar gujarat: 👍👌
[4:52PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i used to be very very jittery in revealing my "secrets" in blog......but i still used to do it for 2 reasons.....1. it was my duty to preserve them.......2. i read a japanese proverb "they won't do it"
[4:52PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: the latest one i have revealed is regarding the options spread......
[4:53PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: some half a dozen mindblowing revelations i will one day jot down when i have got more or when i am sure nobody will take them seriously
[4:54PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: those who will take my sharings seriously are assured of results
[4:54PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i am not ashamed of these self talk because i respect the technology........technology has no shame
[4:55PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa Jammu Rupinder S Raina: We will and are taking it very seriously as a part of learning from you
[4:55PM, 27/01/2015] Mudraa Jammu Rupinder S Raina: Sir
[4:56PM, 27/01/2015] Jagmohan Singh: i can't disrespect or desbelief or doubt my learning just because there is fear that these may be proved wrong!!! these might not be....ever.......self doubt is the greates impediment to freedom

let the fractals help you!!!

and by the way guys....i recommend u study fractals.....i have lately started using this as one of the indicators/ways to confirm whether it is time to step out and/or reverse.....(i misjudged it myself when i wrongly stepped out yesterday, none of its fault)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNxt298VVOw

this is an old video of bill williams lecture on the subject......

i had ignored it earlier as i found the success ratio doubtful....besides my obsession with rsi and william%r...

but now, when i was confronted with the dilemma of when and when not to step out, i desperately needed a solution. none of my existing indicators could give me a suitable answers. and then i recalled this video and got the solution.....

---------

poor Bill Williams and Welles Wilder don't know how bloody potent their discovered trading weapons are.....fractals and rsi, respectively......for the only reason that they got v less time and opportunity or energy to practically implement them to the degree that would have revealed the exact usage and situation when their discoveries would work best!!

---------

the beauty with the theory and concept of fractals is...that the markets themselves decide the points when their move should be considered a bluff or non-bluff

influences on a technical trader

.....a million dollar quesion is....is it possible....can someone trade index purely by looking at charts, without knowing any approaching event or macros etc......answer, i'm afraid....is yes.....that's the essence of technical trading

knowledge of events etc influences and disturbs a technical trader....thus helping operators trap him......

just because greece results are expected.....or just because budget is coming....or just because crude dollar etc etc.....should a deft technical trader ignore the shouting analyses of charts? isn't chart a result of the market situation created by and with the permission of operators? don't operators know where they want to take the market? don't they have even the faintest of clues about what is going to happen? so, therefore, aren't the charts and technicals already reflecting everything?

this reminds me of a beautiful quotation....."how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are".....in trading context i would translate it as "how would you (the technical chartist trader) trade if you didn't know what event is going to be"

fear, lack of confidence, greed, emotions, overconfidence etc......paralyse a technical trader........all night he sees a bull in dreams and what does he do first thing in the morning.....a bear hug!!!

the true effectiveness and efficiency of the poor technical trader's method and skill and training never gets a chance to be revealed!!! nodoubt, he always remains struggling....and one day....thinking that trading is not for him, he quits!!!

2 types of trades

there are 2 types of trades i (am forced to) take

one= when my technicals whisper that the market is about to move in a particular direction.

two = when technicals enter a dark tunnel (are unable to see), and only tacticals are there to guide.

in the second case, while there is no or little directional indication from technicals (i typically call it fog), tactical possibilities with operators to dodge/surprise/maneouvre/shakeup-the-market are good invert indirect indications.

presence of fear covered with froth of disbelief keeps such opportunities covered and potent.

while the first type are pro-active trades, the second ones are more of anticipatory types.

no wonder, it is easier to catch the formers than the latters.

(the current long position in a downtrend is a typical second type of trade)

mole

dear rakesh,

technicals are the moles of the operators

they were planted to create a mass consensus which operators could exploit

which operators, no doubt, do

but still, being a mole, and not a spy, they do give u some critical clues!

--

as i said

technicals are right, but we don't have patience

also, we are so honestly obedient to the technicals that we miss the woods for the trees!

i am beyond the trader age when one assumes.

good enough?

thanks a lot K for ur kind words and feedback!!!

i have heard about india vix but couldn't/didn't learn it for the same reason that a science student avoids commerce classes.
there are, i think, many alternate ways to tame the market.

i was fascinated by rsi, william %r, sma and tactics.

so i spent a hell lot of time in just specializing in these. any other indicator and parameter would have required another life and hence not immediately required. had these parameters i chose failed me, i would have continued my search for more.

i always felt, that any indicator is good enough to win in the market provided we are good enough in that indicator.

regards
Jagmohan

Hello JS Sir,

Just read your blog!!!
Nicely Written, easy to understand language.
The only thing that I did wrong was, I started to read it from 2014 instead of 2010.So I re-read the blog again :)

Well, Just want to know your thought on this, you have given lot of parameters & indicators to help understand the Buying & Exit points, I would like to understand if you have ever considered using the INDIA VIX for assessing the entry & exit points or atleast to gauge the upmoves or down moves in the market.

As per my understanding, India Vix is the sentiment of the crowd for next 30 days, could that be used as an indicator anyhow to gauge the value of Nifty or Bank Nifty.

Your thoughts & suggestions are welcome!!!

my market philosophies

- market doesn't know whether you are long or short. so, rest assured, the market is not after you. since it can't see you (the individual), it is not thirsty for your blood and money. you are yourself running scared and coming in the way of the speeding trolla like a street dog. remain cool and perch atop the moving beast.

- market will either go up or down, it has no third way. so, there is always 50% chance of winning. all we have to do thereafter is to try and improve that percent.

- we are playing on technical level and getting beaten on the tactical front.

and how i am fighting back with them

this is a sequel to my earlier article

"how market beat my best tools"

http://thebestbusinessintheworld.blogspot.in/2012/07/1.html
http://www.mudraa.com/trading/139606/0/how-market-beat-my-best-tools-js.html

the limitations of the tools as discussed by me in the above mentioned articles are not deathknell.
they are real and necessary evils which i accept.
and have resolved to use as contours of a strategy.

1. rsi / william
= i stop following them at the first sign of "bermuda triangle" effect. for rest of the occasions i continue to trust them.
in fact, by not behaving in the copybook fashion, rsi and william tell me silently and indirectly what i should know.

2. options data spread
= don't look at it for first 7 days. thereafter, the sting is generally out.

3. 8-34 sma
= using this to segregate between up and down trends and rangings
and hence take btst stbt and pro-trend intraday shots
also, using this as a confirmation tool.

4. elliot wave
= use as a guide and confirmatory tool to double-check trend and thus take better shots.

5. intraday options data
= i don't use it at the start of trends (range breakouts and sma 34 crossovers)
for rest of the times it works ok especially if i resist the temptation of anti-trend bait by it.

6. yesterday range breakout
= they are less but that is not their fault. just can't say no to those. take it as per availability.

7. btst
= take these and increase the number of profitable trade beyond the "yesterday range breakout" ones

8. call/put options strategies
= just buy plain vanilla options for intraday and btst stbt. risk is limited to give sound sleep and time decay is minimal.

how market beat my best tools

1. rsi / william

= this is one deadly combination.....my pride.
it speaks to me. it tells me a lot of crucial info.
but after prolonged use and going thru quite a few seasons
i found that operators can bull doze these!
operators create extended periods of time when this combo becomes ineffective
like the bermuda triangle where compasses and altimeters and other instruments are reported to stop working or go mad!
when market comes out of its "bermuda triangle" this combo starts working perfectly as if nothing ever happened.
but when do the operators take the market plane in and out of the triangle makes it highly stressful and unprofitable.
following the instruments when you don't know that the readings in them are faulty can and will crash you!

2. options data spread

= i have cracked a code in this and love it.
just like rsia nd william combo above, many a times i found that operators bulldoze what options data spread say.
however, the probability of this happening in the first half of a monthly series is much higher than in the second half
when the operators dare not get caught in their own net they have woven in the first.

3. 8-34 sma

= this is one simple and hell of an effective tool in my armoury.
it works perfectly well in trending markets but is prone to the "bermuda triangle" effect during ranges!
however, its bermuda triangle is different from those in the universe of rsi and options data spread.
so this seems to work where others fail and struggles where others work.
this is one of the best tools but has a serious shortcoming - you can't leave the terminal!
you can't be a swing or positional trader with this and have the luxury of switch off the terminal and go shopping!
you have to keep glued to the screen and keep revising the trailing stop loss or SAR order (stop and reverse - but always in the trade). also, this method has a success ratio of around 40% with rest 60% being whipsaws. but as a consolation, 40% yields large profits and 60% throw less loss resulting in handsome returns. all you have to do it.....follow without head.....just keep following what it does.....even when (inevitably) it frustrates you and generates giants waves of self-doubt during whipsaws. consistency and mental toughness is the key with this simple but powerful tool.

4. elliot wave

= this is a very fascinating tool.
it seems to work most of the time. and when it works nothing feels better in the world. but the trouble is....when it doesn't, it
shatters all the confidence you have gained till then. doubt is always there. still, when it seems to be not working, if you convince yourself that the markets are trying to make a bigger and outer wave, you may be damn right and continue to love this tool. but still, i have seen many instances when this tool is bulldozed and silenced by the operators for some days or weeks. and that is what does the damage...tot he confidence of the trader and his or her bank balance.

5. intraday options data

= this one is a simple and promising tool for intraday but i have seen this failing during start or resumption of the rallies. its
success ratio, therefore has been around 40-45% (which is enough to put you off). still, i use it as an advisor tool.....like a
superstition you know may not work but gives confidence.....more of a habit!

6. yesterday/today range breakout

= yesterday range breakout is reasonably accurate but happens only 5-6 times a month. even then, the move may not be that big. so can't depend on it too much. can't make it the central theme.

7. btst

= i base my btst stbt decisions on four factors. 1)william% r movement on 5min chart, 2) pro-trend, 3) rsi-wlliam combo reading, 4) false sma crosover.
this is the least stressful game. however, clear signals of chances of a decent move are 6-8 per month. still, that is not bad and
this makes this better than others.

8. call/put options strategies

= these are complicated and work only if you have guessed the weather of the day rightly. e.g. different combinations are required in case of range bound movements than in sharp unexpected moves. also, chosing the right boundaries of options you select is crucial. options arena is designed and heavily tilted towards options writers/sellers and that too professionals which have practically unlimited money and sophisticated softwares to manage it all.

which chart timeline to see and when

there are generally the following timescales in charts i see
- 5 year chart with 1week least count (tick size)
- 1 year chart with 1day tick
- 1 month chart with 30minute tick
- 5 day chart with 5min tick
- 1 day chart with 2min tick

5 year chart is for overall general viewpoint and not of very much practical value except for investors.

1 year chart is very good for positional traders who take monthly positions

1 month chart is best for swing traders who take positions for a few days

5 day chart is best for intraday or 1-2 days only

1 day chart is only for finding the exact timing for intraday.

just like the maxim "boss is always right"
if the smaller timeframe chart doesn't work
look at the outer timeframe chart fort he answer.

these array of chart timelines are just like the optical zoom in your SLR.

2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, 64x, 128x zoom
the more closely you want to see.....zoom in
and farther and broader you want to see......zoom out

never follow any son chart blindly without crosschecking the permission of the daddy chart.

Banta Singh went to an eye specialist to get his eyes tested and asked "Doctor, will I be able to read after wearing glasses?"
Yes of course, said the doctor, why not!
"Oh How nice it would be I have been illiterate for so long" replied Banta with joy.
Me:
Ha ha....same thing happens when people enter stock market, wear technical glasses and expect to read profit without getting literate about trading psychology \
SA:
sir i am not active trader
guide me where can i learn technical analysis?
Me:
let me give u a different advise. don't learn technical analysis. observe price movement for many days and ur own methods will pop in ur head.

SA: ok
you mean i have to observe after trading hours?
Me:
observe before during and after trading hours, gradually ur trading gut will get subconsciously programmed. just like some of the best auto mechanics in my town are illiterates but are most educated by their experience and observation
SA:
ok sir
sure
thank you very much for your guidance
observing NIFY only enough right?

Me:
u r welcome!
yes observation is the best education. killer training!
